MATERIALS: You will need your Of Mice and Men book.
INTRODUCTION: In this lesson, you will review literary terms and plot elements.
INSTRUCTION: Review the following literary terms and plot elements before you begin the lesson.
- theme: moral or lesson to the story.
- genre: category or type of literature.
- figurative language: the use of language beyond its literal meanings; creates images, associations, and impressions through connotative meanings.
- foreshadow: the hints and clues that a writer uses to indicate events and situations that will occur later in the plot.
- flashback: a conversation, an episode, or an event that happened before the beginning of the story.
- imagery: descriptive words and phrases that create sensory experiences for the reader.
- symbolism: a person, a place, an activity or an object that stands for something beyond itself.
- irony: three types—situational, verbal, and dramatic. Situational irony is the contrast between what a reader or character expects and what actually exists or happens. Verbal irony occurs when someone knowingly exaggerates or says one thing and means another. Dramatic irony is when the reader or viewer knows something that a character doesn’t know.
- voice: the writer’s unique use of language that allows a reader to “hear” a human personality in his or her writing.
- narrator: the character or voice from whose point of view events are told.
- tone: the attitude a writer takes toward a subject.
- mood: the feeling or atmosphere that the writer creates for the reader.
